Sedgwick notes in the 2008 preface to Epistemology of the Closet that it was written in light of the 1986 Bowers v.Hardwick Supreme Court decision, which upheld a Georgia sodomy law; it was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2003 by Lawrence v.Texas.
