It seems to burn completely in the .38 and is not as critical as the faster powders like Bullseye. If you're unsure, or just want options, check as many boxes as you'd like. It doubles as an excellent pistol target powder for such cartridges as the 38 Special, 45 ACP and many more.
TG also flopped with a Berry's 158 and 148 HBWC.
Any recommendations for load manuals that would cover using 700x in .38/.357 pretty extensively. HS-700X produces some very accurate loads with lead bullets in 38 Special and 45 ACP.
The Hodgdon website does have data for 700X with 158 Gr LSWC, and I've found a number of forum posts where people have had pretty good results with it. I have 4lbs of the stuff, will be getting bullets by hook or crook, so I'll probably need more data. .38 Special (Using Hornady Bullets) reloading data with 353 loads. First, if you want to load 38 Special to just to go out and shoot, most all fast to medium speed pistol powders will work okay. 5 are good choices. 4.4 gr.
When I was shooting matches I did a lot of accuracy testing of target loads with 38s at 50 yards. It has been a number of years since I used it in 38 Special thus do not remeber the specifics. Only if you see more than one load, is it less than maximum. Powders include IMR, Hodgdon, Alliant, Vihtavuori, Winchester, Accurate 1.455 in. If there is only ONE load, it is MAX. Using bullets from Hornady HP-XTP, Hornady HP-XTP or FP-XTP, Hornady FP-Cowboy, Hornady HBWC, Hornady SWC-HP, SWC or LRN.
4.2 gr. Hi-Skor 700-X This extruded flake powder is ideally suited for shotshells in 12- and 16-gauge where clay target and light field loads are the norm. Hornady Maybe it would do better with a longer barrel or other bullet. Then select your bullet weight, powder manufacturer and powder type. load #1: once fired brass mixed. J Frame and a swaged 158 showed TG accuracy with several loads was mediocre but one 700X load grouped very much like Bullseye, which along with a 231 load is still the best result so far.
